Società Agricola Melavì Società Cooperativa

Melavì was created from the merger of three cooperatives – present in the province of Sondrio for many years – following a long integration process and it brings together over 500 apple producing farms in Valtellina and 130 employees. It is recognized as a Producer Organization within the meaning of Art. 11 Reg EEC 2200/96 by the Lombardy Region Decree n. 18653 of 28/10/2004.

The apple has ancient origins in the Valtellina. In fact, first evidence of apple growing dates back to the Middle Ages. After World War II, apple growing increased considerably, strongly modifying the local farming system and agricultural landscape. The commitment and enthusiasm of some apple grower pioneers in Ponte in Valtellina spread to other farmers, convincing them to focus resolutely on specialized apple growing.

The Consorzio Ortofrutticolo di Ponte in Valtellina (Fruit and Vegetable Consortium of Ponte in Valtellina), founded in 1952, strongly boosted the development of apple growing and was an example for other cooperatives that sprang up in the following years. In March 2013, the integration process that saw the merging of the three historical cooperatives of the Valtellina − Cooperativa Ortofrutticola di Ponte in Valtellina, Frutticoltori Villa di Tirano and Cooperativa Ortofrutticola Alta Valtellina − into the new cooperative MELAVì was completed.
